A Friday, May 4, concert at Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park dedicated a $65,000 Home Organ donated to residents by Schmitt Music Company. The concert featured an array of standard songs that are favorites of residents.

The Home Organ went to Tallgrass Creek as a result of a Schmitt Music Company official's inquiry on behalf of the estate of a music enthusiast. The estate wanted the Home Organ to go to a place where it would be appreciated and where others could enjoy hearing and playing it as much as the estate's loved one had done

The Home Organ will be used in a variety of ways at Tallgrass Creek. It will provide entertainment in the Bistro during happy hours and at small parties, as well as at the monthly Birthday Party for residents.

The Prairie Rose Rangers played at the McPherson Opera House on Saturday, May 12. The band, led by Orin Friesen with Kim Coslett, Jolynn MacIntyre, and Jesse Friesen, keeps its musical skills sharp, its repertoire fresh, and its comedy funny by providing nightly entertainment at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper, located on a ranch outside Benton. The band's main emphasis is on classic cowboy music, epitomized by the Sons of the Pioneers, but their musical influences are broad which makes for their own personal, distinctive sound. It should be noted that the band members are not drugstore cowboys;

rather each can ride, rope, and do the real cowboy thing, which adds to the authenticity of the group.

"I've seen their show at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper," John Holecek, Opera House Executive Director, said last week. "It's truly first class and very entertaining. I think it'll be even better on our stage, which is totally geared for live performance. Keep in mind, too, that the Opera House was built when cowboys still rode the range."

 Thanks to Larry Miller of Audio House Sound our website is being updated! We hope we can keep the news and calendar sections of the site current. We'll also finally get the 2012 inductees recognized.

Friends of recently deceased KMHOF inductee Bill Barker have decided to hold an annual "Bill Barker Memorial Jam" on Saturday May 5. This year it will be held at Leroy Brown's, 112 South 18th Street in Parsons at 7:00 pm. The event is part of the club's grand opening, and they have several other bands scheduled to play after the tribute show. Greg (Doc Hoc) Hockett, Bo Gutierrez, Mike Fitzmorris, and Bill Collins will host the jam, and anyone else that would like to join in is welcome. Bill Barker was one of the best keyboard players in the state of Kansas, and had a sense of humor like no one else. Some of the bands he played in were the Little Brothers, Slow Willie, the Livin' End, the Sensational Showmen, Liberty Theater, Space Cat, and the Stardust Wranglers. The last 20 years of his life were devoted to his true musical love - ragtime piano. Help keep his memory alive.

MerleJam was Friday and Saturday nights at Knuckleheads in Kansas City. The event is a fundraiser for the Kansas City chapter of Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO). Hearts of Darkness have been working on their second album Shelf Life for over a year and they're almost there. But they need a little help. All the songs are almost tracked and ready to mix, but the expenses of mixing, mastering and getting vinyl pressed and packaged has become a difficult obstacle. They're trying to raise $7,500 to cover the remaining expenses of putting out the album through Kickstarter, an attempt to "pre-sell" copies of this album at a fair price as well offer you an opportunity to pick up all sorts of other bonus rewards. Kansas City blues rockers the Billybats have been lying low as of late, for a couple of disparate reasons. Firstly, they've been recording a new album, Lather Rinse Repeat, for which they had their CD-release party last Friday, May 4, at Coda. Secondly, singer and guitarist Jason Vivone's car was hit by a truck on Interstate 435 just north of Worlds of Fun six months ago, and the whiplash has left the bluesman in a good amount of pain.
